I'll sum up the story in one sentence. A high school teenager who joins the basketball team to impress a girl falls in love with the game itself. Sounds simple and stupid right? But this anime has got to be one of the best anime of all time. If you are a fan of basketball or sports in general, then this is a must watch. What I love about it is not only the comedy it provides but also the tension that sports usually supplies (or not) to it's viewers. It was so popular back in the day that it inspired many young asians to play basketball in areas such as Japan and Taiwan.
The only gripe is that the anime is almost 20 years old and the quality is crap compared to modern anime. The manga though is of very high quality, especially in the later books. The anime also leaves out what is in my opinion the most epic game in the story (even though the ones in the anime are not bad). So I recommend anyone who liked the Slam Dunk anime to check out the manga even if you just start off where the anime stops. Trust me you won't regret it.
There has also been whispers that the author, Takehiko Inoue, is ready to do a sequel but I'm not sure that it would be a good idea. I think it would be hard to improve upon where he left off and I hope he doesn't ruin his masterpiece by milking it.
